New page! Hathoraz is about to be devoured! Or is she? No! It’s Sir Daddlewater- The owner of the park! How did he survive?! How did he hide in his own hat?! When will the dreded Bat Queen arise? These questions and many more will be answered in this very chapter of BTB!!!
Daddlewater has a tail and odd ears because I wanted my halflings to be a bit more exotic. Short fat humans was never enough for me. He kind of looks like a little from ‘The Littles’. Did anyone watch that back in the day or am I just super old?
Hath got a bit ranty about sports there. She was originally even more ranty (and specific) but I cut that down a bit. It’s not that I hate sports, but I do get fed up of them getting so much attention while other things get so little. It’s constantly rammed down your throat where I am. Football, tennis, cycling, athletics and so on and so on. It’s maddening (to quote Hank Venture). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MusyO7J2inM

“the reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.” was that a quote from Whoopi Goldberg a knight in Camelot?
My source (and I suspect the origin) is Mark Twain (who is an absolute genius). Such a line may predate the great man, but I expect your Knight in Camelot quote drew its’ inspiration from Twain 🙂 Another one of his: “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it”.
Yeah meathead kick/throws ball really far, weeks of massive worldwide coverage and glory. Scientists finally get a fusion powerplant to successfully sustain itself, and no one cares. And yes, we are in fact THAT close to the practically infinite power generation of fusion power. Yet all I’ve been hearing about for the past few weeks was “World Cup this” and “World Cup that”, you’d think the possibility of INFINITE CLEAN ENERGY within the next few years (decade at the most) would get more coverage than “guy kicks ball into goal”. I can’t even watch local weather reports on the weekend because they get canceled in favor of whatever sports are playing that day, even with severe weather people might need to track! Hell, they’ve canceled weather reports in favor of sports coverage when we’ve had HURRICANE movements we’d need to keep track of.
Yeah-It can be pretty annoying. I get that there are a lot of people that like sports, but maybe more people would be interested in art and history and literature or science and engineering if those things got even ten percent of the attention that sport seems to get.
I suppose it’s down to money at the end of the day. Primitive tribalistic attitudes that draw crowds of people wishing to defeat the other ‘tribe’ which in turn creates a great opportunity for the generation of advertising income.
On the plus side at least there are options now. When I was a kid we had very limited TV channels. Often there would be one show per week that I actually wanted to watch. ‘Red Dwarf’ or ‘Games Master’ for example. If there was a big sport event going on (Soccer most commonly but it could be the Olympics or Wimbledon) there was a pretty good chance that one small 25 minute slot of the week that I actually wanted to see would be taken off to make room for even more sports 😛
Now at least I can more or less ignore the endless flippin’ football, though it still finds it’s way into everything else somehow. There are wars and natural disasters and other important events but no time for the news to cover those. Not with all this football going on 😛
The people where I am (UK) seem almost brainwashed. I didn’t come back here until I was almost 11. Maybe that’s why I’m not in the cult. I missed that part. Not at all sorry about it. I’m fine with people enjoying football of course. I just wish other things got a bit more attention and resources put into them. I wish people were encouraged to try other things a bit more.
Yeah, its still annoying when you need to watch local news though, since you can’t just switch to another channel for that if there’s a sports broadcast. I will say though that at least corporate greed is doing something good from that angle in the States, since I’ve been hearing that sports might get moved exclusively to dedicated channel packages soon. So no more normal broadcasts being overwritten by random ball games, you will have to specifically seek them out. There’s been complaints about how that’s going to hurt things like sports bars, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough to stop the idea. And yeah, the UK is absolutely insane with their sports fans. Heck UK sports fans are SO crazy they were the actual inspiration for Warhammer 40K’s Orks, its why they have thick Cockney accents and love to fight over anything.
Unfortunately football has spread since the days of 70s and 80s hooligans and now almost everyone’s a footy fan rather than just fighty yobbos (though there are still plenty of them). It really is like some strange cult. I went to get some food at KFC while a match was on and the roads plus the restaurant were utterly deserted. Like that bit in Resident Evil 4 when all the villagers suddenly leave. ‘Where’s everyone going? Bingo?’ XD
