New page! Page 1066. We have reached the Battle of Hastings and the beginning of the Middle Ages. The Dark Ages is not a very trendy term these days, but I think it’s quite a useful delineation of a period between the collapse of the Roman Empire and the beginnings of the recovery of more advanced engineering and military science. Very Euro-centric of course, but I think that’s okay if you’re talking about European history.
Yes, I know the so called ‘Dark Ages’ were not completely bereft of culture, but I think it’s fair to say that something was lost with the collapse of the old order. An architect of let us say the year 780AD for example could not replicate a gigantic Roman Aqueduct. The remains of the Empire were relics. The knowledge to re-create such wonders not to mention the organizational skill and logistics were lost at that time. While not wholly barbaric, the ‘Dark Ages’ were a post apocalyptic setting.
We have reached 1066, however. The beginning of a new age and many wondrous things to come!

I had never thought of the dark ages as post apocalyptic but it really was. Also Bork the immortal he must have really “Borked” up the time line!
There have been many. I find the calamity of the Sea Peoples quite interesting (about 1200 BC) culminating in the collapse of an earlier Mediterranean world that had bureaucracy and cities and a postal service and so on.
It makes me wonder how many other civilizations there have been. Humans have existed for over three hundred thousand years and yet evidence of any form of sedentary civilization only really goes back about 14000 years. Some say that there were no cities or nations in the modern sense of the word before then, but I find that hard to believe. 286000 years is a long time. Dozens or even hundreds of civilizations could have risen and fallen in that period. I guess we’ll never know for sure. Makes me think though. Perhaps there were once great walled cities in all manner of places-Long since abandoned and erased by the hand of time.
