Okay I officially don’t like Vintus. While I totally agree with him that they shouldn’t have split the party his attitude toward the mountain gnolls is garbage. From where i’m standing he’s a gnoll that was bred, perhaps magically, to essentially be a pet to humans and other core rulebook races and he has the gall to look down on gnolls who weren’t and consider himself their better? Yeah I don’t think so.
Well-We are all products of our upbringing. He’s got some bad ideas about other gnoll, but unfortunately people tend to believe what they are taught as children. Whatever you learn then is your truth. It’s the way the world is. Breaking out of that way of thinking can be tough-Even when confronted with factual data that goes against what you were told as a child. Of course, in this case he’s actually right to be suspicious of the gnoll but that’s not because of them being ‘uncivilised’-It’s more down to their true objectives and allegiance 🙂
He is suspicious of them due to his keen insight but he’s a bit of a snob too. He does say ‘This particular group’ so it may not be that he looks down on all Mountain Gnoll. More that he doesn’t trust this bunch (and found them to be rather uncouth) 🙂
There certainly is tension in this world though. Tension between all the various races (Dwarf vs Elf etc-The usual) but also tension of a different sort. Basically there are three groups. The races that fought on the side of ‘good’ in the goblin wars, the ‘monster’ individuals that choose to live in the lands of their former enemies and the ‘monsters’ that choose to go on living beyond the borders and laws of the ‘good’ races. As with any situation like that it’s very complicated and it’s more about shades of grey rather than a clearly defined right or wrong 🙂
I disagree. He literally says “these are wild mountain gnoll after all. uncivilized beasts” That isn’t specific it’s a blanket statement which implies he would believe the same about any mountain gnoll not raised in what he considers civilised society.
But he also says ‘I agree with the sentiment’- In other words, he agrees with Sir Thomas that certain attitudes towards ‘monster’ races are illogical. Of course, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t hold certain attitudes inspite of what he may think on a purely logical level. He is a bit of a snob but he doesn’t hate wild gnoll. He just has the attitude that they should ‘try a bit harder’ and that they make other gnoll look bad with their barbaric behaviour.
It might be why he’s so proper all the time. There’s a stereotype of gnoll being crude and lawless, so he (Vintus) makes a great effort to be the very opposite of that. Now he’s confronted with a rowdy bunch of pureblood mountain gnoll mercinaries and he’s worried for his employer and also (on a subliminal level) that they might make people think less of him. Living as a gnoll in ‘civilised’ society is not easy-Particularly if you’re the sort of person that wants to be treated with civility. Yeshka would do fine because she wouldn’t care about what people say about her-But Vintus is not like that. His own self worth comes to a great extent from being a part of ‘polite society’. In being so prim and proper that he makes the nobility look ill-mannered and crude by comparisson. But he has to be like that to avoid criticism. He has to be perfect because he’s a gnoll 🙂
Perhaps on some level he’s actually envious of the freedom the wild gnoll have. He’d certainly never admit this though.
Well you could also look at it as the “Wild” gnolls are actually true gnolls and how they actually are. He, on the other hand, could be described as pandering to the humans. Of course that’s probably the way Goret and Crew would probably see it. 🙂
Just realized in that final panel it seems to hint that perhaps Fulmo is Vintus’ daughter since Daddlewater seems slightly mollified when Vintus tells him he understands and Domina starts talking about how she’s sure they’re BOTH fine. I just didn’t make that connection at first as it can be hard to gauge gnoll ages. I also wouldn’t have assumed Tiger was Goret’s mother either except for the fact that it was stated plainly. XD
Ah yes-I was worried people might think that. She’s actually his sister. While that’s not quite the same as a daughter, it’s still a cause for concern (more so that a general worry for the safety of other innocent people). Although Vintus seems quite calm and collected he’s actually very upset and stressed out beneath the surface. He’s just a very disciplined person 🙂
Well even there it still makes sense in the context. It was just the language that made me think otherwise.
Hello Peter, this is obviously my first response to you. I have been following your comic since 2015. I just never felt the need to make a account to reply, now I haven’t fully caught up yet. I’m still working on it.
The reason why, I’m replying now. Well two reasons, but one I’ll wait until you know me better and I know that this is very bold of me of how I’m new. The big second reason, well the last three years I’ve been calling your comic (By the blue-balls). Your showing nude characters and I’m happy that your un-censoring them, well you still got a lot to do there.. You haven’t fully uncensored yet. But, no sex in it? I think, I kinda understand why you don’t want too. But, you could do a clever way of putting sex/rape in it without showing it. Like show the beginning, then just show the end without showing the middle.
Like for example and what made me annoyed enough to make this. There were many times before this and after this. I’m just using this as a example Do you remember “the deal” that Tanuki was trying to convents Kazu to be his avatar that she’s going to have to have sex with him. You had it right, you had him convince her that she has nothing to worry about of how that’s not her real body. But then, you just had them shake hands to make the deal. I know it’s way to late for this. But, this is for the future… Here’s how I seen it play out. Kazu convinced, she agrees and just like that Tanuki snaps his fingers. Now both of them are naked, Kazu looks down at herself surprised. Then Tanuki asks, if she’s ready? Then we see both of them, Kazu in the background facing us her face is very blushed and she looks very surprised and nervous. Next to her head is a though-bubble in it is a big-red-rocket. Tanuki in front of us facing her, the only thing we see is his back, his tail, his ass maybe his balls and his legs and one of his arms. The only way we know that he has an-erection is by Kazu expression and though bubble. Then Kazu try’s saying that she ch-changes her mi__. But then, Tanuki tackles her before she has a chance to finish. Then we leave to see what the others are up to, after a few pages of that. We come back to see that they’re laying next to each other done. Tanuki looking very satisfied and Kazu looks like she’s unconscious, the only thing we see that show’s that they fucked is the “white-stuff” on Kazu mouth, on her breasts and obviously on her crotch… So, you can have sex/rape in the comic. Just without showing them doing it. I really like your comic. But, it feels like your holding yourself back.
Thanks for the kind words 🙂 Well I certainly plan on including sex in the comic (Rath will not be one of those protagonists that gets scared at the prospect when he finally gets the chance) I probably won’t go into the realms of sexual assault as although it’s a sexy comic it’s also (for the most part) fairly light hearted and silly so anything that extreme might feel a bit out of place. My philosophy on the subject has always been along the lines of the ‘Jack Harkness’ test (which is also how Venom operates). As long as a creature is old enough and intelligent enough to consent and is consenting then it’s all good 🙂
I don’t think rape can never be shown for fear of upsetting people as it’s a thing that actually does happen in the real world, so omitting it from all stories seems wrong, but it’s a bit too serious a topic for a comic as silly as BTB to include. People will get stripped naked through battle damage and magic and what have you, they may be tied up and even spanked and there will be sex, but rape’s just something that’s a bit too serious for this story to tackle 🙂
Thanks again for reading and I hope you’ll keep on going with me and my characters. I have plans for the Tanuki god. He may get some more followers soon. Perhaps Maxie could be his Paladin? It might be quite funny to have a character that’s really in to the idea of being his follower (Vs Kazu who’s a bit reluctant). Should lead to a lot of fun situations 🙂
Um, I can’t tell if your being serious or just being sarcastic? Your emoji are to small to see, I don’t know if they’re smiley or frowny faces. Also for the r_p_, ok ok. I just figure that I would added it in for shock and awe for the readers. I see that it’s a very touchy subject even for a fictional world.
Like I said, I’ve been following your comic for some time now and I’m almost caught up. I’m on page 238 now and I know from you, I’m new. So, I don’t want to appear that I’m putting pressure on you to add something new to your comic. I know following the story there’s really no time for… (Well that’s not true, there were a few times. Where you could have… I guess, I’m the only one bringing it up). But, If you fully read my comment, definitely the part with Tanuki and Kazu. That is what popped in my head, before you had them shake-hands… Speaking of, what do you think about my “what if” with Tanuki and Kazu? Did I explain it good enough that you could see it in your head scene by scene and what do you think?
No I wasn’t being sarcastic-I take any comments (particularly involved and heartfelt ones like yours) seriously and try to give a well thought out and polite response. I use a lot of smiley faces because I want to convey that I’m happy to answer any questions or respond to any input. It can be difficult to get tone across sometimes. I’m hoping to go for friendly rather than sarcastic 🙂
I get what you mean. It’s the ‘just bang already!’ phenominom that appears so often. For me that appears in a lot of manga and anime, where something embarrassing happens (the character loses their clothing or whatever) and the camera always pulls away and you just hear them screaming. Or the nudity is only seen by other characters and not the reader. That sort of thing can be very frustrating so I kind of understand where you’re coming from. Stop teasing us and show the goods! XD That said , I understand why they do that. They want the show or comic to be able to be read by younger readers or what have you 🙂
Sex is definitely not off the table but I want to use it at the right moment. I definitely could have had Kazu and the Tanuki get it on, but at the time I decided the gag of him just having a handshake made for a funnier moment and also pushed the story forward a bit faster (and that was a section of the story that probably dragged a bit too much-I know some people thought as much ;)). I’ll take on board what you’ve said though. And don’t worry-The Tanuki god will keep on trying. I mean, a handshake’s all well and good for the entry level avatar package, but to gain ‘full power mode’ you really need to go a bit further than that. There’s only one way to fully synch up with a god 😉
Perhaps when it does happen I’ll have Kazu reluctant at first but then she gets really into it and by the end the Tanuki god is getting a bit freaked out by the carzy stuff Kazu wants to do with him (orc sex can be pretty rough) XD

Well, it doesn’t just have to be those two. We’re back with the wolf pack now, I’m sure they be want to get it on. But, not with each other of course and I’m sure you’ll have future characters as well. Um, who is Mazie again? Sigh, I don’t know if anyone else told you this. But, you really need to make a character sheet for your site. So, people don’t need to go through your comic to look for certain characters.
Alright last thing, I do understand about the manga and anime. But, there’s that big reason why, so many here in the west are attracted to that stuff. Some say it’s because of good story telling. Well the rest of us say, it’s because it’s more mature. Unlike the western-media here that like’s to baby it’s stuff. That also explains, why web-comics are becoming more popular then normal comics. You have more freedom to do what you want… Also, I greatly doubt there are kids reading your comic and if they are. They’re doing so in secret.
Yeah-For sure 🙂 There are good western comics getting published, but a lot of them are pretty bland (at least when it comes to erotica-Violence is fine for some reason XD ). Japanese comics cover a lot more ground-From office drama and stories aimed at older women all the way to hardcore erotica. Web comics can do the same as you don’t need to worry about reaching a large enough audience to justify printing costs and distribution 🙂
Of course, everyone has a different level they prefer to go to. One person’s ‘pushing it to the limit’ is another person’s ‘playing it safe’. This is doubly true of the portrayal of sex. I’m not sure what my limit is. I know some readers prefer not to have full frontal nudity while others would prefer it. I just go with what seems right when I make the pages. Usually I cover genitals up, but they do sometimes slip though uncensored.
Generally my policy is to keep the comic suggestive with minor nudity (skimpy costumes, breasts and butts) and save the more 18+ stuff for bonus art and pinups and what have you 🙂
Maxie is the mouse character that wears mostly green. Currently a bard but she might re-spec into something more fighty soon 🙂

This is going to be my last comment to you, until your next page. Well, as you know from my first reply to you. I am one of those that do wish that you uncensor more not just the females, but the males too. When did you start this comic 2013? Well it’s 2020 now, I’m sure many of your readers are grown up now and many are even older since then. I don’t think to many people will complain, if they see a humanoid or a anthro flaccid or erect “sausage”. Or, even more stuff like that.
Maxie, yes. I do remember her, she was in a few page’s back. Yes, I can definitely see her being easily convinced by Tanuki. Hey, if you replace Kazu with Maxie in my “what if” that still works. I don’t know how your going to get her to his dimension. But, you are free to take my “what if”, if you want. Maybe add something to it, then after the deed is done and she shows off her new powers have Kazu ask her if she fucked him to get those powers. She says yes, then Kazu replies that she could of just “shake his hand”. Just for Maxie to feel stupid for not asking for any other way to make the deal… That’s of course, if you do any of that. You could do something totally different.
Last question, I have seen your devintart and furaffinity pages. I’ve seen soldiers, tanks, war-planes and airships in them. What made you decide to make an adventure comic, instead of a steam/diesel punk war comic? Or, did those pic’s come after you started your comic?
Good question 🙂 While I tend to make adventure type comics I probably would have made the setting a bit different ordinarily. In the past I made a comic called ‘Goblin Hero’ (started in 2003) which also had a goblin as the main character but that one was set in a diesel punk world (sci-fi 1940s tech level with giant robots and what have you) while several other concepts I’ve done (5 or so pages to try to get publishers interested) have mostly been set in more original worlds than the standard fantasy setting of BTB.
BTB actually started life in 2009 as a comic on a forum about the 3.5 rules set of D&D. I asked the peple that ran the forum if I might be able to advertise my services as a character potrait artist to drum up some business and they asked me to make a comic as the comic that used to be posted there had ground to a halt.
I agreed and made the first few pages of BTB. I normally put a lot of work into developing the setting and the characters but in this case (since I didn’t see it as a ‘proper’ comic-Just a gag strip for a forum) I just did a couple of pages of sketches to design Rath, Zeen and Kazu and then started making pages with very little thought about the world they lived in or anything else. It was just a generic D&D setting. That probably would have been that, but after making half a dozen pages or so I realised that I liked these characters and I wanted to see what would happen to them 🙂
At the time I was also working on another comic project with a writer and holding down a job, so progress was slow. I finally got that other project done at the end of 2011 so 2012 was when I was able to put my whole effort into the comic and was also when it started to gain more of a following 🙂
It’s unlikely that Maxie can take Kazu’s place as it’s already been established that the Tanuki God can only communicate with those of Royal Blood. Kazu was apparently keeping that a secret, and before getting hit by Rath’s Sexy Beam Cannon, Maxie was just a field mouse.
She won’t replace Kazu, but as the Tanuki god gains in strength she might be able to communicate with him 🙂
I was looking through the comic and a thought hit me (hurt to, I think it used a metal bat). There has been one confirmed case of a Mortubera costume with Darksoul’s minions and a possible second showing up in this dungeon. So are Mortubera costumes just popular enough to be readily available? I could see that with the popularity of sexy vampire costumes.
That could indeed be the case. I will neither confirm nor deny that the Mortubera in this dungeon is actually old man Jenkins in a rubber mask and that he ‘Would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling gnoll kids!’ 😀

Wow now that I think about it the Gnoll team has become the Scooby Doo gang. They went into a spooky amusement park at the behest of the owner because people are disappearing. They then proceed to split up to search for clues! 🙂 Let’s see as the dog Vascarl would be Scooby, since he eats everything Yarost would be Shaggy, as the smart one Hathoraz would be Velma, Which Leaves Moroz as Daphne, and Goret as the charismatic leader Fred. 🙂
