I have ADHD, and I have long been learning to understand how this feature affects my relationships. On the one hand, impulsivity and difficulty concentrating can create misunderstandings: I can forget about an appointment, interrupt in a conversation, or switch from topic to topic. But on the other hand, ADHD gives me liveliness, a genuine interest in people, and the ability to genuinely engage in dialogue. In friendship, I have found those who understand my “attention spans” and even laugh with me at funny things. In romantic relationships, it is important to discuss the features in advance: for example, my partner’s structure helps me, and my spontaneity helps him. At work, I have begun to delegate more and use reminders so as not to let colleagues down.
