Another new character?! I’m gonna have to start killing these guys off! Or at least embarrass them enough that they run away to bare bottom land and are never heard of again (like the giant Dulboot in Spike Milligan’s ‘Badjelly The Witch’).
This lady makes weapons and armour! What’s the best magic item you’ve ever received in an RPG? I rarely get anything very good so I have to make characters that don’t need a lot of magic. I got a +3 magic spear that made the bearer immune to poison back in 3rd edition but the Paladin in the party got a much more powerful sword soon afterwards (along with an NPC cleric that constantly healed and buffed him and +5 full plate that cast ‘Heal’ twice a day as a free action. Plus he got an even more powerful sword later on. I’m not bitter…).
I do like giving out cool items as a DM though. 5E tends to have fewer magic items than 3.5 and Pathfinder did. Probably for the best. These things CAN get out of hand…

i am disapointed in 5e magic items but i can usually create some good ones or at least interesting ones. like the dice of some things (pun off deck of many things). Description: a strange black six sided die that has golden images carved into the sides one of a man in a cape, a jester face, a holy symbol, a man slumped in defeat, a man acting foolishly, and a man clutching his head. effect :roll a 1d6 and cast the spell on the user that the dice it lands on depending on the number 1 Bane 2 Bless 3 Tasha’s Hideous Laughter 4 Divine Favor 5 induce headache 6 heroism. this die can be used once per short rest.
That dice sounds pretty cool 🙂 In one of my current games our party just bought some magic beans that can have a random effect like that (yes, we blew our gold on magic beans.. ;P ).
One aspect of 5E items that I really don’t like is the way stat boost items work now. In older editions they used to give a bonus. For example, +2 to strength or +4 or maybe even +6. The new ones just give you a flat score like Str19 for example. This means that the characters that WANT a good Str score can’t actually benefit from these items in a lot of situations (as they already have a good score).
As a result the most effective use of such items is to give them to characters that have low scores in the stat in question. For example, give the Str19 gloves to the Str8 wizard. Which doesn’t really help the wizard much. He has a better Str save and he can carry more? I guess his athletics skill is a bit better? So now he can tread on the toes of the stronger party members. I really hate that. Bring back stat boost items that are useful to characters that care about the stat in question!
I suppose they did this to try to keep power creep under control, but I feel like the old way would be fine at least with physical stats. The main danger from super high stats comes in the form of near irresistible spells but this wouldn’t be a problem if good stat boost items were limited to Str, Dex and Con which might also go some way towards giving martials a boost in later phases of the game.
Uh… I think I might have spotted the art equivalent of a typo. Is it just me, or is that dragonborn’s hand holding that hammer on backward? Because it looks like the back of his hand is against his hip, instead of his fingers which should be there in that arm position.
It is possible for the knuckles to face the hip. Try it for yourself-You may be astounded by the results 😀 The character is not gripping the hammer-More holding it in an attitude of casual relaxation-Indicative of their familiarity and comfort with said crafting implement. At least that was the intention. Maybe I didn’t get it quite right 😀
Must be my eyes then, because I actually did try the pose as I saw it out of sheer confusion at whether it was possible. I made it close but it felt like my wrist was being pulled the wrong way and stopped before matching it. Of course, that could also be me hitting that age past 30 when things start to get creaky preventing me from matching it…
I THINK it’s right, but perhaps putting a hammer in her hand pushed it a bit too far. It’s kinda awkward. Not actually wrong, but not ideal. I always do my best with the time I have but I am far from perfect 🙂
Whose “boing boing” are those in Panel 6?
Skittarius’s 🙂
